Thanks to the warm weather, Victoria is a year-round destination. Outdoor activities, eco-tours, sightseeing, major attractions …are all part of the city’s charm.

Spend half a day at the Royal British Columbia Museum

The museum depicts the humble beginnings of live in British Columbia and focuses on the development of civilizations, people, economy and wildlife. Admission is CAD $21.60 for adults. Children (3-5) can visit for free. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Take a walk in Beacon Hill Park

Located just two blocks from the Inner Harbour in downtown , the park is an oasis of green spaces , excellent for relaxing, walking, jogging or taking time to enjoy a picnic. The park is also ideal for bird watching ; you can see ducks, peacocks and bald eagles.

The Beacon Hill Children’s Farm is a seasonal petting zoo with miniature horses, rabbits and other animals. It’s an excellent option if you travel with children.

See the rose garden in The Butchart Gardens

It is one of the most popular attractions in Victoria. It offers an opportunity to walk among flowers and be dazzled by colors and smells. From late June to September , the Rose Garden is at its best.

Visit the Pacific Undersea Gardens

This is a unique underwater museum , an interactive marine animal museum located in downtown Victoria. It is home to over 5,000 marine animals playing and swimming in their natural habitat.

See the city from above: Craigdarroch Castle

Built in 1889, the castle has 39 rooms. But you are here for something else: climb in the tower for some excellent views of the city and the Pacific Ocean.

Visit the The Fisgard Lighthouse

It is the oldest west coast lighthouse, built in 1860. The original gun batteries are intact and the self guided tour does a good job to take you back in time.

Shop at Trounce Alley

The shops sell unique items and you can find clothes and art. Antique Row is home to antique shops and many galleries.

Eat Chinese food in Chinatown

Victoria is home to the oldest Chinatown in Canada. Needless to say , it’s the best place to try Chinese food. Stop at some shops to pick up unique items, too.

A walk on the beach: Hollydene Beach

Even if you don’t want to get a tan, you can surely spend some time walking on the beach. Plus, this one is located near the University of Victoria but feels miles away from the city.

On the other hand, Willows Beach is the most popular beach in the city and ideal for families with children.

Feel like a giant at Miniature World

Kids and adults alike love to feel like giants in this fantastic 3D world . There are several themes and you can easily spend half a way walking through the buildings. It is open daily except on Christmas Day. Admission is CAD $12 for adults and CAD $8 for children.

Buy a book to take back home

There are many famous bookstores in Victoria and you can spend hours looking for an interesting title to bring back home (and certainly read while you travel).

The Canadian food is very diverse. Each province has its unique dishes and many of them have been brought by immigrants. Not surprisingly, Canadians love their meat. And the fast food dishes are quite popular, too. And let’s not forget the French influence either.

Maple Syrup

It’s what we usually put on our pancakes but can be used to sweeten yogurt and cakes, too. The syrup is pretty inexpensive in Canada and makes for an excellent souvenir to bring back home (and also gift your friends and family).

The best way to taste the syrup is to visit a working sugar bush, where the sap is collected and the syrup is boiled. Thankfully, many such places welcome visitors and offer tours.

Poutine

It is a French Canadian dish, claiming the name of national food. It is made with French fries, topped with brown sauce and curd cheese. It is fast food and it originated in Quebec. You can find Italian poutine (served with Bolognese sauce and sometimes Italian sausages) ,Greek poutine (served with feta , Mediterranean vinaigrette and gravy) and New Jersey poutine (served with mozzarella).

Salmon

Seafood is excellent in Canada and salmon makes no exception.

Pâté Chinois

It’s a dish popular in Quebec, made from layers of ground beef, canned corn and mashed potatoes.

Montreal-style bagels

They are served with a thick layer of cream cheese. Kind of feels like you are in France eating a baguette.

Pasta

Nowadays, about 10% of those living in Toronto claim Italian ancestry which explains why the pasta is good and popular here. Little Italy and Corso Italia are stocked with excellent places to try pasta dishes.

Corn on the cob

During summer you can find this treat anywhere in agricultural areas. You can buy them already boiled or buy them in bulk and boil them during the same day.

Dill pickle chips

The tangy dill pickle chips are very popular in Canada. That’s opposed to Europe where the grilled chicken flavor seems to be preferred.

Shawarma / Donair

The existence of shawarma in Canada is due to the Lebanese immigrants. The meat filled pita is a hearty meal, which will you keep you full for some hours. They are cheap and a must-try for the visitors of Ottawa where you’ll find the majority of restaurants serving this dish. The Halifax Donair is a similar dish. It’s very similar to the Greek gyros.

Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich

Smoked meat is not something you won’t find only in Canada but in Montreal it’s amazing and the best in the country.

Jerk Chicken

About 6% of those living in Toronto claim Caribbean ancestry which translates in excellent dishes. One of them is Jerk chicken. Roti can also be easily found and is amazing.

Beaver Tail

Relax, it’s not something belonging to an animal. It’s fried dough, coated with butter and usually sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar. Various other toppings can be found. Excellent treat for those cold Canadian days.

Butter Tart

it’s a very popular Canadian dessert, made with butter, sugar, syrup and egg. It is baked until the filling is semi-solid and is crispy on top.

Ice wine

Before being harvested, the grapes are left to freeze on the vine. Hence a very sweet wine with high acidity is produced.

Have you ever considered taking an extended, RTW trip? Throwing caution to the wind, chucking it all, and heading out on the road to see and experience the world? More and more people are becoming fed up with waiting until retirement to travel for longer than their one or two weeks of vacation allows, so they are taking time in the middle of their careers to plan a round the world trip.

When planning a trip of this magnitude, one of the first things that travelers do is start thinking about the itinerary. Dream destinations fill notebooks and spreadsheets. You gawk at pictures and wonder what it would be like to visit. You think and wonder and plan and start adding more and more cities to the trip.

So where does Vancouver fit into all this? Would a traveler want to add Vancouver to a RTW trip? British Columbia’s largest city is one of the most popular destinations in Canada and would fit in nicely to any round the world itinerary. If buying a round the world plane ticket, you can either add Vancouver in or travel overland as part of a segment through the US Pacific Northwest.

If you do decide to add Vancouver to your trip list, you won’t be disappointed. The city and surrounding areas are absolutely stunning, and if you are an outdoors person, you’ll be in Heaven. The 2010 Olympics have quickly vaulted Vancouver into a very popular international travel destination, so don’t miss out!

But, pack your sunscreen , walking shoes and enjoy the lovely nature.

Weather

The weather in Canada varies according to the region. That’s true for the summer, as well and of course, for August. The month is hot and usually humid. Actually it’s one of the wettest months in the country. Pack light summer clothing and don’t forget the umbrella. Just in case.

Some sample temperatures:

Edmonton avg high 22C / avg low 8C
Vancouver avg high 22C / avg low 13C
Toronto avg high 25C / avg low 14C
Quebec City avg high 23C / avg low 13C
Montreal avg high 24C / avg low 15C
Ottawa avg high 25C / avg low 14C

Flights and accommodation in Canada in August

Just like July, August is also part o the peak travel season in Canada, which means that everyone wants to visit the country pretty much at the same time. Aside from the crowds, more tourists also mean high prices. So book the flight to Canada and the hotel in advance. Consider staying in a hostel or even try camping , especially if you plan to explore the outdoors.

What to do

Summer is the time to enjoy the festivals. Several theatre and arts festivals take place in Stratford (Ontario), Niagara-on-the-Lake, Banff (Alberta) and Saskatoon (Saskatchewan).

Regardless of which city you plan to visit, there are museums and historical sights to visit which appeal to everyone. For example, Halifax is home to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Canadian Immigration Museum at Pier 21, to name just some of the most important museums.

Farmer markets are at their best during summer and August doesn’t make an exception. Therefore, no matter which city you visit, plan to spend half of a weekend’s morning search for local goodies. Pack a picnic basket and head to the beach or to a quite place in the mountains.

Summer is definitely the time to plan any outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, walking, swimming, or fishing in various interesting locations within the country. Also, if you visit Toronto, put Niagara Falls on the must-visit list as well.

Flights and accommodation in Canada in July

Summer also means more tourists. Aside from the important sites being crowded, more tourists also mean high prices. So book your flight and hotel in advance.
What to do

Canada Day is the national day of Canada and is observed on July 1. It celebrates the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act (now called the Constitution Act, 1867). The act united the British colonies into a single country , called Canada (at that time, part of the British Empire). Outdoor public events take place all over the county, such as parades, carnivals, festivals, air and maritime shows and free concerts.

A variety of festivals are in full swing during July. The Festival of Fire, Beaches International Jazz Festival and the Caribbean Carnival Festival take place in Toronto.

Regardless of which city(ies) you plan to visit, you can find museums and historical sights to visit. Halifax is home to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Canadian Immigration Museum at Pier 21, to name just some of the most important museums in the city.

Farmer markets are at their best during summer, so no matter which city you visit, plan to spend half of a weekend’s morning search for local goodies.

Summer is definitely the time to plan outdoor activities. You can hike, bike, walk, swim, or try your luck at fishing in various interesting locations within the country. Also, if you visit Toronto, put Niagara Falls on the must-visit list as well.

The warm and long days together with the crowds which haven’t yet arrived here are just some of the reasons to plan your visit during June. It is also a great time for walking, hiking, biking and camping.

Weather

The warm weather requires summer clothing but make sure to pack a jacket for the evenings. Tornadoes do occur especially in places such as Southern Ontario, Alberta, southeastern Québec during this month.

Some sample temperatures:

Calgary avg high 20C / avg low 7C
Vancouver avg high 19C / avg low 11C
Toronto avg high 22C / avg low 12C
Quebec City avg high 21C / avg low 11C

Flights and accommodation in June

Since June represents the shoulder travel season, the prices for both flights and accommodation are not at their highest. It is possible to find bargains but don’t relay on them. The warm weather attracts quite a lot of tourists so book everything in advance.

What to do

The warm weather is ideal for spending time in the outdoor. You can even enjoy camping this time of the year. Pack your walking shoes and enjoy the trails. Walk, bike or hike in the superb areas.

June is the month when you can enjoy at least some festivals while visiting Canada. The Orangeville Blues & Jazz Fest , the Blue Bridge Festival (poetry, songs, chamber music), Ottawa International Children’s Festival , the 50th Annual Welland Rose Festival , Magnetic North Theatre Festival (contemporary Canadian theatre) , World’s Longest Street Festival on the World’s Longest Street , Toronto Tango Festival , Westfest (music, art), Luminato (arts), Canada Dance Festival , Ottawa Fringe Festival and Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival are just some of the festivals you can enjoy.

If you prefer to stay in Toronto, don’t miss the views from the CN Tower and take a day trip to Niagara Falls. Or you can relax on the beaches on Toronto Islands while looking at the Toronto skyline.

Toronto is the most populous city in Canada and the fifth largest city in North America. Located on the shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in the world. There are plenty of things to do in the area so listing them all is impossible. However, we’ve come up with a list of the top things to do in Toronto.

See the city from the CN Tower

The CN Tower stands 553 m high and is basically a radio antenna. And yes, a tourist attraction. The basic ticket takes you to the 346 m Look Out Level with indoor and outdoor observation decks. And then there’s the glass floor (be careful if you are afraid of heights). A café and a restaurant complete the tourist attractions. Or you can go 30 more storeys up, to the Sky Pod at 447 m. In high winds you can literally feel the building sway.

The ticket for the Lookout and the glass floor costs CAD $23.99 for an adult , while the total tower experience (Lookout, glass floor, sky pod, movie, motion theatre ride) costs CAD $35.99 for all ages.

Visit the Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a must-visit place for anyone visiting Toronto. Located 137 km from the city, the Falls can be reached by train, bus or car. The cheapest option is the bus and you can easily do this as a day trip from Toronto. You can see the Falls from the top or behind. But regardless of what you plan to do, you’ll be amazed by the forces of nature.

>>read more about Getting from Toronto to Niagara Falls

Bike the Martin Goodman Trail

The trail runs along or near the shore of Lake Ontario. It runs from Humber River to Beaches Park. Some sights along the way include: Humber Bay Park, High Park, Harbourfront Centre, Distillery Historic District, Kew Beach and Balmy Beach.

The path connects with other parks and trails. One of the most interesting is Don River trail. Martin Goodman trail is only part of the Waterfront Trail, which extends for 900 km , from Niagara -on-the-Lake to the Quebec border.

Shopping is your cardio

Toronto is a shopping city , so head to the exclusive shopping district Yorkville. If you don’t have the money celebrities do, then head to the Toronto Eaton Centre, where you can find excellent bargains. Oh and there’s Yorkdale, the first Mall in North America. Worth your time and some money spent. For those on a limited budget, the Kensington market is the best choice.

See the world bite by bite

Toronto is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in the world so you can find here a Chinatown , Little Italy, Little India, Koreatown and a Greektown. But that’s not all! Great eats from Poland or Portugal are also easy to find. Therefore, enjoy a world tour in your plate.

Local beer anyone?

You don’t need to spend a lot on imported beers. No, sir! Toronto is home to microbreweries so if you want to relax after a day of sightseeing, try something local. But coffee and tea lovers are just as happy as there is a retro coffee house where beans are roasted on the premises (at Balzac Coffee Roastery).

It’s time to party!

Toronto is home to one of the best party scenes in the world so no matter what your clubbing style is, you’ll find something to suit your taste and mood.

Relax on the Toronto Islands

Located a short and inexpensive ferry ride from the city, the Toronto Islands are an excellent choice if you plan to relax. Walk, bike or have a picnic while looking at the Toronto Skyline.

The British General Consulate in Toronto is meant to do everything it can properly do to help British people in difficulty while in Canada.

All British nationals traveling and living in Canada are encouraged to register with the Foreign Office’s LOCATE service. British citizens don’t need to register the marriage and birth certificates because Canadian certificates are acceptable for most purposes.

Should you lose the passport, make sure to let the Consulate know, although they won’t be able to issue a new one. However, they can guide you and inform on what you should do.

If a British national dies while in Canada, the death must be registered by the local Canadian authorities and not the Consulate. However, they can offer basic information about the local police system and legal system if there is evidence of suspicious circumstances. Should you want help with sending a body for burial or cremation in the UK, the Consulate can help with offering the information needed for this procedure.

If a British citizen is arrested in Canada, the Consulate can inform the family and friends only if they have permission from the person involved. Thy will also contact the person involved within 24 hours of being arrested. They can help with general information, list of lawyers and send messages between the prisoners and their families, but cannot get the person out of prison or pay any costs incurred.

Should rape or sexual assault occurs the British national can help with contacting the family or friends, and giving information about local hospitals. If your child is abducted or under the threat of abduction, the Consulate can help with providing information about local lawyers and verify with the immigration services to try to locate the child.

Emergency contact

Please call 416 593 1290 when you need assistance from the British General Consulate in Toronto.
