Most think of the smell of freshly minted paper – or of green money chips – when Las Vegas comes to mind. I don’t blame you for automatically reflecting on the glitzy hotels, the casino-culture and the beautiful people that frequent the famous Sincity Strip. Las Vegas has an allure to it and and who in their right mind wouldn’t be drawn to kitsch bright lights and want to relive Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On power ballad?

However Las Vegas, surrounded by desert and barren mountains, can also be experienced for its eco-friendly embrace. With the natural progression towards a more environmentally aware society, Las Vegas has seen many vacation hotels, restaurants and adventure activities adopting a greener approach to protecting our environment.

How to eat green in Vegas

Celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck is a leading innovator in Las Vegas eateries adopting a more ethically environmental approach to running restaurants. Puck himself has opened a number of eco-friendly restaurants in Las Vegas. Nestled inside Las Vegas’s Springs Preserve, an outdoor park area, is Puck’s Spring Cafe which features 100% organic foods, and the menu is constantly updated and refined with ingredients “straight from the farmer to the meals you eat.” Make sure to try the Turkey Burger and the House salad – fresh, light and oh so delicious.

Just as it sounds, Raw Cafe caters to vegans lovers. Be warned that if you are a carnivore this may be the wrong choice altogether. However Raw Cafe has a stellar reputation and provides tasty juices, raw meals and even more delectable raw dessert options. Do not forget to sample the mouthwatering portabello mushroom wrap and the berry loaded cheesecake.

LBS Burger Joint has embraced an environmentally conscious approach not only to its food produce, but to the building materials used to build the eatery. The restaurant also recycles and uses 100% bio -degradable drinking straws. What’s even better is that you get to build your own fully natural burger with 6 patty options and 22 vegetables and grains options.

How to sleep green in Vegas

The Palazzo, The Venetian, Meetings and Convention Space has invested both time and resources into creating a greener and more cleaner way of living and, essentially, sleeping: The Palazzo is one of the biggest green campuses and LEED certified buildings in the world . From the energy saving and recycling initiatives to the eco-safe cleaning materials and water cooling treatment system, it is clear that hotel management are serious about promoting a clean energy initiative.

Green Vegas Adventures

The Springs Preserve is a 180-acre cultural and outdoor mecca which promotes and educates people on a more sustainable and green future. Visit the museums to learn more about the history of Spring Preserve. The outside areas house summer concerts and the magnificent botanical gardens. It’s a brilliant place to take your family and teach your children about clean energy and how easy and accessible sustainable living can be.

Adventures junkies with an affinity for sustainable living are in for the thrill of their lives. Not only can you explore a mountain terrain without causing any damage to its natural habitat, but you can do so by being suspended from cables. If this is something that tickles your eco-friendly fancy then the Bootleg Canyon Zipline Tour is worth exploring further. The red Mountain in Nevada has never been more exposed and the tour itself is designed to have as minimal an effect on the environment as possible.

Las Vegas always loves a party, so it’s no surprise that the city capitalizes on holidays like Independence Day. In Sin City, there are really two different ways to celebrate the 4th of July: On the Strip with other tourists or off the Strip with the locals.

Regardless of how and where you toast Independence Day in Las Vegas, the most important thing to remember is this: It will be hot. Very, very hot. Vegas in July is consistently above 100F. If you plan on spending any duration of time outside, wear sunscreen and drink lots of water. Dehydration and heat exhaustion sneak up on a lot of visitors, especially if they’ve been drinking.

Despite the heat and harsh sun, Las Vegas is a popular destination in the summer, so don’t expect to find outrageous deals on lodging, dining and shows, though it never hurts to ask around about Las Vegas deals before you arrive.

On the Strip

There is no shortage of things to do on the Strip for the 4th of July, though most holiday-oriented festivities are not family friendly. When you make your reservations, ask what your resort has planned for the holiday. Many of the resorts bring in DJs for pool parties, nightclubs are packed with celebrities and most music venues are booked with concerts. If reservations are required for these events, make them well in advance of arriving in the city.

Pool parties are the place to be to celebrate Independence Day (and the days directly before and after the holiday). Adult-only pools such as Bare Pool at the Mirage, Tao Beach at The Venetian and Rehab at Hard Rock Hotel are among the most popular swimming holes. The weekly Ditch Fridays pool party at The Palms and the XS Pool Party at Encore also promise music, drinks and mingling with hip, young party goers.

Once the sun goes down, hit the nightclubs, which are guaranteed to be packed. Reserve VIP and bottle service in advance. Pure at Caesars Palace, LAX at Luxor, TAO at The Venetian, Tryst at The Wynn and XS at Encore are among the hottest nightclubs for celebrity sightings and guest DJs.

If you’re traveling to the Las Vegas Strip for fireworks, it’s hard to say where you’ll find them. Just a few hotels shoot off fireworks but they change every year and are usually announced a month or so in advance. Regardless of which is in charge of the fireworks festivities, you should be able to see them from anywhere; the ideal viewing location is on top of any open-air parking garage.

Off the Strip

If you’re interested in finding out what the locals are up to for the 4th of July, the best thing you can do is check the local papers, Las Vegas Review-Journal and The Sun, for event and activity listings. If you’re looking for traditional fireworks over open water, head to Lake Las Vegas. There’s usually a huge concert at Lake Las Vegas followed by a fireworks show over the lake. Check listings in advance and book your tickets early.

Many families head to Lake Mead for the classic family camping experience complete with splashing in the water and possibly renting a boat, but if you choose to do the same, it’s important to realize that this is protected land by the National Park Service and fireworks are not permitted. In fact, depending on the weather, you may not even be allowed to have a campfire.

The Station Casinos—including Red Rock, Green Valley Ranch, Texas Station, Santa Fe and Sunset Station—usually set off fireworks as well. Check the listings for concerts coming through these casinos during the 4th of July holiday; ticket prices are usually a little cheaper than on the Strip but you can still find some big names.

For family fun, the local parks are usually a good bet for daytime amusements like children’s activities, live entertainment and food vendors. Boulder City, a small town located southeast of the Las Vegas Strip, holds an annual Damboree, which kicks off with a community pancake breakfast. Festivities throughout the day include a parade and culminate in a city-wide fireworks display. Nearby Henderson holds a similar celebration.

If you don’t mind driving, Primm Valley Casino in Primm has a day’s worth of drink discounts and special activities as well as a fireworks show. The annual Rockets Over the River in Laughlin is a spectacular fireworks show choreographed to patriotic music.

Fireworks Show

While there are tons of parties and shows in Vegas on 4th of July (see full listing for this year), most people are still interested when the fireworks start!

Where to See Fireworks:
Five Station Casinos’ – 9pm
City of Henderson – dusk
Caesars Palace – 9:15pm (Saturday July 7)
Lake Las Vegas – 9pm (Saturday June 30)

The modern city state of Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates and is a truly exciting and cosmopolitan destination in the Middle East. With a blend of local culture and contemporary skyscrapers, the city is a thrilling place to visit. With luxury dining and accommodations, upscale shopping and incredible tourism attractions, Dubai is one of the top places for visitors in all of the Middle East. Here are six of the top attractions in Dubai.

Burj Khalifa

As the world’s tallest structure, the Burj Khalifa is a popular attraction in Dubai. The tower stands at a height of 828 metres and boasts an observation deck on the 124th floor of the tower. While most of the building is devoted to office space or residences, guests can buy tickets to ride the elevator to the observation deck and admire the expanse of the city below.

Jumeirah Beach

Although there are several beautiful and sandy beaches in Dubai, the most popular is Jumeirah Beach. It consists of seven individual beaches that are each one kilometer in length. Some are devoted to swimming and recreation, while others are for nightlife, dining, parks or the water-themed amusement park called Wild Wadi.

Dubai Marina

This area of Dubai consists of new developments and is rapidly becoming one of the more upscale shopping, dining and residential areas in the city. The Dubai Marina boasts a large shopping complex, several beaches and an extensive boardwalk.

Gold Souk

Although much of the shopping in Dubai is very modern, the souks are ancient markets that are steeped in local culture and history. High quality gold is sold in the gold souk, but the bargaining and casual negotiations are an unusual shopping experience when buying such expensive products. Even if you’re not in the market to buy anything, walk through the market and take in the piles of gold dust and stacks of gold bars for sale.

Dubai Mall

Dubai is known for incredible malls and upscale shopping experience, and the Dubai Mall is the perfect example of this. Located at the base of the Burj Khalifa, the mall boasts the honour of being the largest shopping center in the entire world. It holds a large aquarium, an ice skating rink and more than one thousand stores and vendors.

Palm Jumeirah

This island is one of the world famous Palm Islands, an incredible destination of man-made islands created to look like a large palm tree. Palm Jumeirah occupies more than five square kilometres and boasts luxurious accommodations, dining and shopping.

Whether you are searching for modernity in the Dubai Mall or the Burj Khalifa or culture and history in the old souks, Dubai is the perfect holiday destination.

Nevertheless, it seems that the biggest slot jackpots still all come from Las Vegas, the fabled Sin City. In the spirit of big jackpots, we present to you a list of the seven largest slot machine jackpots in Vegas history.

1.Excalibur

March 21, 2003
$39.7+ million

Megabucks is the most popular progressive slot machine in Las Vegas. It only requires $3.00 to win the jackpot, and the smallest possible jackpot is a whopping $10 million. It’s really no surprise that this game holds the record. The biggest the jackpot has ever gotten was $39,710,826.36, and it was won by a software engineer from Los Angeles who chose to remain anonymous.

2.Desert Inn

January 26, 2000
$34.9+ million
Cynthia Jay-Brennan

It should be no surprise that the second biggest slot machine jackpot in Las Vegas history is also from a Megabucks machine, this time at the Desert Inn. The amount was $34,955,489.56, and the winner was Cynthia Jay-Brennan, a cocktail waitress. This win has given rise to a bittersweet Vegas legend. Six weeks prior to winning, Cynthia was rear-ended by a drunk driver. The accident left her paralyzed and killed her sister.

3.Palace Station

November 15, 1998
$27.5+ million

Would you believe that Megabucks also holds the third spot? This jackpot was $27,580,879.60, and it was won by a 67-year-old retired flight attendant. This was the first time Megabucks had surpassed $20 million, but the best part of the story was the retiree had won $680,000 on a Wheel of Fortune machine at the same casino the previous year.

4.Bally’s

March 27, 2002
$22.6+ million
Johanna Huendl

At this point, we’ll stop being impressed by Megabucks. On March 27, 2002, 74-year-old Johanna Huendl went to breakfast at Bally’s. As she waited for her food, she played a few spins on the Megabucks machine and walked away with $22,618,156.67.

5.Caesars Palace

June 1, 1999
$21.3+ million

On June 1, 1999, a 49-year-old business consultant from Illinois walked into Caesars Palace and won $21,346,952.22 on the very first spin on a Megabucks machine. He hadn’t even planned to stay long, and even though he chose to remain anonymous, his story remains a Las Vegas legend.

6.Cannery Casino

September 15, 2005
$21.1+ million
Elmer Sherwin

This is another Megabucks win, another crazy story. Elmer had won $4.6 million in 1989 at the Mirage, and he vowed to hit it again. He finally did 16 years later at the ripe old age of 92.

7.ARIA

January 21, 2011
$12.7+ million

A woman and her husband were staying at the ARIA Resort & Casino. They were in town for their niece’s birthday and hadn’t even planned to gamble much. While waiting one afternoon, she tried her hands at Megabucks and won the big one after spending just $6.

Most of the biggest jackpots in history have come from slot machines in Las Vegas. As online jackpots continue getting larger, it won’t be long before an online casino, and free slots make the list.

Of course, once you do go to Vegas, you will most likely be drawn back again at some point. It’s a fantastic destination for a myriad of reasons – bachelor and bachelorette parties, weddings, and concerts among them. There’s always something to do in Vegas, even if you aren’t a big gambler.

For those of you considering a trip around the world, Vegas might be a great addition, particularly if you’ve never been there before. Part of the appeal of a RTW trip is going to places you’ve never been and seeing cities you have always wanted to see. If you are not from the US and planning on visiting, then Vegas is one of those quintessential destinations that really should be seen. If you are from the US and have yet to visit Las Vegas, then adding it to the beginning or end of your trip might be able to be done for cheap when it comes to plane tickets.

Adding Las Vegas to your round the world trip itinerary would give you a city that is unique and unlike anywhere else in the world, and isn’t that one of the draws of long-term travel? There really is nothing like Vegas, and you may be surprised at what it has to offer. Sure, there’s the gambling and shows, but there’s also the food, lots and lots of great food all over the place. There are even plenty of free activities in Vegas in case you are on a tight budget, and there are also plenty of cheap hotel rooms. In fact, you can get a hotel room for as cheap as $30/night, which is nearly impossible in most other cities in the US. Add in the surrounding areas – like the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam – and you have all the makings of a great addition to your trip.

If you are planning a RTW trip, consider Vegas as a possible destination. It can be a great transition from one country to the next, and there really isn’t an experience like visiting Las Vegas.

What better way to celebrate the best of Sin City than with a gift that brings a little bit of Las Vegas home … wherever you might live? Not sure what to get for the Las Vegas lover in your life? Here are several ideas:

Fuzzy Dice

They’re fun, cheap and just a little bit tacky. Hang a pair of fuzzy dice from the rear view mirror of your car, and you’ll remember the good times you’ve had in Las Vegas—and those yet to come—every time you hop behind the wheel.

>>Buy fuzzy dice now.

Authentic Elvis Sunglasses

Nothing says Las Vegas quite like Elvis, and now you can take a little piece of the King of Rock-and-Roll with you when you sport a pair of these authentic Elvis sunglasses. Elvis is an iconic Las Vegas character, and any visit to Las Vegas is sure to be met with several references to the man himself. It’s bright in Las Vegas … beat the sun in style! These gold and brown sunglasses are officially licensed.

>>Buy authentic Elvis sunglasses now.

Books about Gambling

There’s no sure bet when you walk into the casino, but you can increase your chances of being successful at gambling if you understand how to play. There are many books available about the history, art and philosophy behind gambling, and they speak to everyone ranging from beginners to professional players. For those who are just learning the basics, Casino Gambling for Dummies may be the right book to choose. This book breaks down the vocabulary of gambling, provides information about several standard casino games and is written in an easy-to-understand manner.

1000 Best Casino Gambling Secrets, written by Bill Burton, offers one thousand, simple categorized tips that will benefit anyone in a casino setting. It provides information on which games should be avoided at all costs, how to choose the best slot machines, how to make your money last, what bets are the best and the worst on the casino floor, the basics of card counting and when you should continue playing (or when you should pack it up and head home).

The King of Vegas’ Guide to Gambling: How to Win Big at Poker, Casino Gambling & Life! is written by self-made millionaire Wayne Allyn Root of Spike TV’s King of Vegas. This book isn’t a how-to book in the sense that gamblers will learn the secrets to the casino floor, but rather Root takes a philosophical approach to explaining how his spiritual principles have allowed him to be successful at gambling and in life in general.

Casino Game Set

Just because you can’t be in Las Vegas doesn’t mean you can’t play your favorite casino games. This casino game set makes it easy to take Las Vegas home. This isn’t just another cheap knock-off that you’ll find at the local mega retailer. Instead, it comes with high-quality gaming equipment that would be used on the casino floor, including a roulette wheel, playing cards, dice, craps sticks and poker chips. It also comes with full-sized felt table layouts for blackjack, baccarat, Texas hold ‘em and craps as well as roulette betting.

>>Buy the casino game set now.

Las Vegas Slot Machine Bank

Save your pennies for your next trip to Las Vegas with a piggy bank shaped like a slot machine with the fabulous Las Vegas sign on the front. It comes with all the bells and whistles of any slot machine, complete with a flashing sign when you hit the jackpot. What better way to put away that extra change so that you can make your way back to Sin City soon?

>>Buy the Las Vegas slot machine bank now.

Books about Las Vegas

We hope that you’ll do most of the planning for your Las Vegas vacation by taking advantage of the resources on WhyGo Las Vegas, but we can also appreciate the desire to hold a travel guide in your hands once you actually arrive in Sin City. For this, we recommend you pick up a copy of Frommer’s Las Vegas, Lonely Planet Las Vegas or Fodor’s Las Vegas. For a quick history lesson on Sin City, you might consider reading Las Vegas: An Unconventional History or The Battle for Las Vegas: The Law vs. The Mob.
Show Tickets

If you know when you’ll be back in Sin City, splurge on a pair of tickets for a Las Vegas show you’ve been itching to see. You can choose from laugh-out-loud comedy, family friendly performances, something with a romantic twist, any number of shows created by Cirque du Soleil and many more. Las Vegas, which is within driving distance, may be better reached by plane.

Fresno and Las Vegas

Driving distance between the two cities is 390 miles / 638 kilometers.

Air

There are several nonstop flights from Fresno to Las Vegas every day. Carriers include Continental, United, US Airways, Delta and American Airlines. Flights with a single stop almost always land in Los Angeles before continuing on to Las Vegas. Flight costs usually run somewhere between $150 and $200, but you should always look for cheap flights to Las Vegas because discounted prices are common. Flight time is about one hour and 20 minutes. Total travel time is about three hours.

Bus

There are several buses a day going to Las Vegas from Fresno, California. In most cases, there is a bus transfer in either Los Angeles or Bakersfield. The shortest route, which runs through Bakersfield, takes about eight and a half hours, while the longer routes, which traverse through Los Angeles, can take upwards of 13 hours. Regardless of route or length of time, though, the average ticket price for a bus ride between Fresno and Las Vegas runs from $60.00 to $80.00 one way.

Car

If you want to drive from Fresno to Las Vegas, plan on taking the better part of a day to do so. The shortest route between the two cities, which is approximately 390 miles, takes about six and a half hours to drive. To go this route, travelers should take 99 south out of Fresno for more than 100 miles. In Barstow, California, hop onto I-15 going east into Nevada, which goes all the way into Las Vegas. It really is a straight shot, and though parts of the drive are a bit boring going through the barren desert, it can be a quick drive as long as there’s minimal traffic. On Friday afternoons, the traffic going east on I-15 can be nightmarish.

Additional routes head through Los Angeles, but unless you need to stop by the city to pick someone up, there’s no reason to add the extra mileage to your journey.

When it comes to hotel rooms, there is no shortage in Las Vegas. In fact, it is often the resorts themselves that are the attractions … and for good reason. These aren’t your average hotels. They have wild themes (think Luxor and Paris), huge casino floors, dozens of restaurants and attractions to keep visitors busy for days on end.

Considering the fact that the hotels draw travelers to Las Vegas, it’s probably no surprise that the city also has some of the largest hotels in the world. Of the many accommodations in Sin City, here are the seven largest hotels in Las Vegas.

MGM Grand

Number of rooms: 5,690

The MGM Grand encompasses a wide array of standard suites and luxurious accommodations known as the SKYLOFTS. When it opened in 1993, the resort was the largest in the world. The casino is nothing to sneeze over either. At 171,500 square feet, MGM Grand’s casino has more gaming space than any other property in Clark County. Of course, the property doesn’t stop there. Nearly two dozen restaurants, nightclubs and entertainment options can also be found at MGM Grand.

Luxor

Number of rooms: 4,408

The size of Luxor Las Vegas is deceiving, especially when compared to some of the highrises on the Las Vegas Strip, but when you consider the fact that many of Luxor’s hotel rooms are housed in two towers separate from the pyramid, it makes a bit more sense. Luxor is a hotspot for late night entertainment with several lounges, adult-oriented shows and nightclubs. It is also home to two of the most popular educational attractions on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Mandalay Bay (including THEhotel)

When considered separately, Mandalay Bay has 3,223 rooms and THEhotel has 1,118, but together these two joined properties make up the third largest hotel in Las Vegas. Though not themed like many other Las Vegas hotels, Mandalay Bay attracts lots of visitors simply because of its convention space and arena. The resort also has a massive gaming area, several noteworthy restaurants and North America’s only predator-based aquarium.

The Venetian

This classy, 5-star Las Vegas hotel has been impressing crowds since it opened in 1999. Most people take the time to explore The Venetian for its Grand Canal Shoppes, which wind through a realistically depicted Venice complete with street performers in St. Mark’s Square and singing gondoliers. Also noteworthy are the award-winning restaurants and a variety of production shows. The Venetian’s sister hotel, The Palazzo, is also a large hotel with 3,443 rooms.

Excalibur

Even those who play have to sleep eventually. Excalibur isn’t known for its rooms (though it has a lot of them). Rather, this medieval-themed resort is primarily about fun and games. This property is particularly family friendly with minimal nightlife but plentiful arcade and midway games as well as a show that requires people to eat with their fingers. Luckily for families, this is also one of the most affordable hotel options on the Las Vegas Strip.

Perhaps one of the most famous Las Vegas hotels, the Bellagio is both luxurious and fun. Few people enjoy a visit to Las Vegas without spending time scoping out the Bellagio Fountains. Of course, in addition to this famous free attraction (and the Bellagio Conservatory), there are also dozens of award-winning restaurants, plenty of nightlife options and a large casino floor. Cultural enthusiasts will want to check out the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art.

The four-day rally is one of the nation’s largest exhibitions of biker culture, and it includes a variety of competitions, shows, demonstrations and exhibits.

One of the highlights of the event is the Artistry in Iron, Master Builders’ Championship, an invitation-only, peer-judged competition that showcases innovative master bike builders. Other events, which are open to all attendees, include the Custom Bike Show, a Harley Davidson Cafe Hog Out competition, demo rides, poker runs with prize money, autograph signing sessions and live music. A stunt show showcases freestyle riders and half pipes.

The Las Vegas BikeFest is held at the Cashman Center, and entry to the vendors exhibition and events is relatively inexpensive. As always, the real cost of traveling to Las Vegas during a major convention is the hotel room. In order to save money on bookings, travelers should always look for deals to Las Vegas and check for vacation packages or discounts and coupons that can be redeemed during travel for a less expensive stay.

>>More information on the event can be found here.
